Monitoring vital signs

   Once the patient is positioned on the table, sensors are placed to continuously monitor blood oxygen (left photo), carbon dioxide, electrocardiogram, blood pressure, pulse, and temperature. Values are displayed on a computer screen (right photo) and observed carefully throughout the case. The computer is programmed to automatically generate warning signals if any values stray from acceptable limits, allowing prompt intervention to prevent possible complications.
