Placing an intravenous catheter It is critically important that an IV be in place so that emergency drugs and fluids can be administered quickly if necessary. Emergency situations are rare for my cases, but we are always prepared to handle potential problems quickly and safely. The IV is removed during recovery when it is clear that the patient can take liquids without nausea or vomiting. The IV is placed prior to the patient's move to the operating room for older children and adults. Younger children and infants are lightly anesthetized by mask before the IV is placed in the OR. |
