Dilating Drops

This frightens children more than any other part of the exam - but it's an essential part of most pediatric eye evaluations. Cycloplegic drops have two important effects: pupil dilation, which allows a better view of retinal and optic nerve abnormalities, and cycloplegia, pharmacologic relaxation of the ciliary body which controls the shape and power of the lens. Cycloplegia allows a more accurate determination of the optical power of the eye, which can be an important factor in treating strabismus and amblyopia.

The drops do sting, similar to pool water with moderately high chlorine levels - or soapy bath water; but the discomfort only lasts for 10 to 15 seconds.
